Final: Ole Miss 75, SC-Aiken 70 OT

There’s a stigma that goes along with losing your exhibition, and the Rebels were able to avoid that tonight thought it was an ugly process.

A certain amount of ugly is expected when you’re trying to get as many minutes for new guys as Andy Kennedy was tonight.

Sebastian Saiz (7 points, 6 rebounds) looks like he can help this year, but neither he nor Dwight Coleby will be big producers early.

Aaron Jones wasn’t very good in his first game back, going 3-for-10 from the floor for six points in 24 minutes. Demarco Cox was better with 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting in 28 minutes, but both missed clean looks down low.

Here’s Kennedy:

Basically, the question with Marshall Henderson out has been who will pick up the scoring slack. LaDarius White is the logical choice. He was 5-for-13 from the floor and hit a big 3-pointer near the end of regulation, but he didn’t have much flow throughout the game.

White was 2-for-5 from the arc, however, and the rest of the team was 0-for-6.

It’s certainly a different looking team without Henderson. He might have attempted 11 3s in the first half.

Derrick Millinghaus led Ole Miss with 15 points. White and Jarvis Summers had 13, and Cox 11.

Martavious Newby had 12 rebounds, 10 on the defensive end.

Exhibition basketball. The Marshall-less Rebels take on D2 South Carolina-Aiken.

A little shoot around here with the bigs, mostly Demarco Cox and Aaron Jones, a little Sebastian Saiz too.

I’ll be back with a few notes and postgame video after the game.

I’m glad they don’t put “ugly” to the right of the “W”. :))
“Exhibition” games are nothing more than an experiment. I hope it paid off for Coach AK last night. Next week is for real…

PA, I remember that you were in love with Perez last year. I was hoping that he would make a big step forward this year. I did not see the game, but his stat line was laughable. He played fifteen minutes. During that time he missed seven shots (made 2,) he had 4 turnovers and 3 fouls! That is almost once a minute of giving the ball back to the other team without a score. At least during that time he had 2 whole rebounds. Incredible.
I am not too concerned about AJ and Demarco’s shooting percentage. As the year goes on , their number of shots will go way down. It was good to see AJ play 24 minutes with only 3 fouls.
Newby is a beast. He will bring the toughness that we lost from Murph’s graduation.
Saiz stat line does not look that bad. We probably do not need him to score a lot of points. We do need him to play tough interior defense. Did he look ok on that end of the court?

UMBBFan, I think Perez has tremendous upside. Great athleticism. Unfortunately he’s not been able to produce much. He was given a number of opportunities Friday night and didn’t get much done. If he can turn a corner he can really help this team.

Just noticed your Saiz question. I don’t think anybody looked particularly good on defense. As far scoring, how much they need from Saiz will depend on how Aaron Jones progresses.
