From the Maxwell Football Club, the candidates for national coach of the year go SEC, SEC, ex-Ole Miss. The three are Missouri’s Gary Pinkel and Auburn’s Gus Malzahn — who face off in the SEC championship game Saturday — and Duke coach David Cutcliffe.

Meanwhile, Cutcliffe has repeated as ACC coach of the year …

In the SEC, Auburn and Missouri meet Saturday for the conference championship. CBS analyst Gary Danielson, in a Tuesday conference call, jumped into the Olympic Wayback Machine to describe Auburn’s win over Alabama:

Staying in the SEC West, how close is LSU to reaching another national championship game? Nola.com’s Ron Higgins doesn’t answer that question but says climbing back up the ladder for the Tigers needs to include more read option on offense. …

Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota says he’ll return for his junior season. He’s a redshirt sophomore right now. …
