Friday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Friday morning …

Hey, have you seen that Auburn field goal return played back on ESPN yet? Alabama players and coaches have seen it more than once, no doubt. But as bowl game Selection Sunday approaches don’t expect an Auburn-Alabama rematch in the Sugar Bowl. Auburn, of course, is hoping for a BCS championship game spot but will be in the Sugar if that doesn’t happen and it has beaten Missouri in the SEC championship game this Saturday.

SEC commissioner Mike Slive is not in favor of a Tide-Tigers rematch in the Sugar Bowl.

The Ole Miss-LSU Sugar Bowl rematch in 1959 worked out well for the Rebels. …

Prior to the Egg Bowl Hugh Freeze had his players submit to him three things — non-football related — for which they were thankful. Carlos Davis announced some thankfulness on Twitter Thursday:

I’Tavius Mathers followed with a similar post. …

Alabama offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier and Boise coach Chris Petersen are the early front-runners for the Washington job which came open earlier this week when Ed Orgeron was not asked to stay as head coach and Steve Sarkisian was named at USC.

Vanderbilt’s James Franklin was rumored to be a top candidate for that USC job, along with Petersen. It will be interesting to see what other jobs open and if any of them attract Franklin.

It’s unlikely he’ll get in the Wake Forest conversation, but here are a few guys who might.

What Franklin has done at Vanderbilt is impressive, but he’s also benefitted this season by being in the East. Georgia and Florida had massive injuries this season, and Tennessee is still rebuilding.

It seems there could be a dangerous intersection ahead between Franklin’s repeated call for Vanderbilt Stadium sellouts and Vandy fans’ inability/unwillingness to provide that. Back in the summer Franklin said he was tired of hearing “excuses” when he encouraged fans to buy season tickets.

It’s also possible that the Vanderbilt rape case could limit Franklin’s possibilities in a year when a number of attractive jobs might not open up. For a while it looked like Texas and Nebraska were headed down that path, now maybe not.

In the meantime, here’s a cool take-off on “Where’s Waldo” as James Franklin stars in “JamesFranklinWasThere.”

By way of, this comes from ESPN’s Colin Cowherd and an interview in which USC AD Pat Haden described his meeting to tell Ed Orgeron he wouldn’t be the Trojans’ head coach. …

From Ole Miss strength coach Paul Jackson, here’s what the Rebels are doing while the bowls sort themselves out:
