Freeze waiting on Moncrief’s call

Donte Moncrief has said he’ll rely heavily on the advice of Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze. It’s not clear when those two will chat about Moncrief’s future, but it will have to be soon.

The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft is Jan. 15, less than two weeks away.

Freeze says he doesn’t know when the discussion will take place.

“Not sure. Waiting for their call,” he said in a text message this morning.

Last Friday Moncrief told us he hadn’t received feedback from the NFL regarding his draft status and where he might be selected should he decide for early entry.

Here’s what’s Chase Goodbread had to say about Moncrief’s Music City Bowl performance. Frankly, it was a game that many thought would have been replicated by Moncrief more in the just-completed season. It was also a reminder of his skill and potential, and that’s what the draft is based upon, not college production. currently ranks Moncrief, should he choose to come out, as the No. 10 receiver out of 424 available.

CBS ranks Moncrief the No. 16 wide receiver. Ten ranked ahead of him are underclassmen.

With most bowl games now complete we’re seeing more and more players put their name into the hat. Yesterday it was South Carolina end Jadeveon Clowney. No surprise there.

Despite Gil Brandt’s tweet that both Texas A&M stars — QB Johnny Manziel and WR Mike Evans — would enter the draft, the Chick-Fil-A Bowl was like a four-hour Manziel pomo and an upcoming decision. It’s been assumed for a long time that Manziel would declare. Evans’ entry will give Moncrief something more to think about.
