Final: Kentucky 84, Ole Miss 70

Credit the Rebels for fighting to the end. You just can’t let Kentucky so thoroughly control the game for 30 minutes, as the Wildcats did, and expect a good result.

The Rebels were minus-16 on the glass, and you will hear Andy Kennedy in this video speak with frustration about the play of his bigs. Ole Miss is killing itself with missed rebound opportunities, letting opponents have second and sometimes third and fourth shot chances.

No one, young or old, is stepping to the front for Ole Miss. I Have said all along that I expect the young guys, Sebastian Saiz and Dwight Coleby, to be good players. They’re not very good right now. Maybe they get there with a year in the weight program, but adding weight doesn’t necessarily translate to increased toughness. That’s a personality thing. We’ll see how they progress in a year.

It was good to see Martavious Newby back. He can bring some energy defensively.

And it was good to see Jarvis Summers get to the rim and score. It’s been a while since he’s done it as consistently as he did tonight.

We’ve talked a great deal about the need to develop a third scorer. Tonight they get 22 from Summers, 21 from Anthony Perez and 18 from Marshall Henderson.

That’s pretty good, but you can’t get as little from everyone else as Ole Miss got tonight. Four other people scored in the game for the Rebels, and they finished with three, three, two and 1 point.

That’s not a recipe for success.

This is starting to look like a “transition year”. Too many young and inexperienced guys who are unable at this point to help carry Jarvis & Marshall on a consistent basis. The Rebels might win only two more games–at home–against Alabama and Vandy. I don’t know if 18-13 will get you to the NIT.
Disappointing year which started out very promising. Coach AK really needs to recruit some BIG men to handle the post and rebound…and another ‘shooter’ to replace Marshall.
