Going for the sweep

Ole Miss will send right-hander Sam Smith to the mound today to try and complete the sweep of Georgia Southern.

Pitching has been very good for the Rebels this weekend.

Chris’ Ellis complete game on Friday, a 3-0 Rebels win, gives him 15 scoreless innings to start the season. Juco transfer Christian Trent was good again on Saturday, giving up just three hits and one run in seven innings with no walks and six strikeouts. In 13 innings this season Trent, a left-hander, hasn’t walked a batter and has struck out 12.

It’s a pretty good offense the Rebels have held down in two games. Georgia State was averaging almost nine runs a game coming in. The Panthers scored 28 at Illinois in winning twice last weekend and seven more in a mid-week win over Savannah State. They return some key players from a team that ranked┬áthird nationally in hitting at .321 and fourth nationally in runs at 7.7 last year.

Smith threw five scoreless innings at Stetson in his first start but had to work around two hits and three walks to get there.

The Rebels were good on offense Saturday but didn’t have to face Georgia State reliever Garrett Ford, a lefty who shut them down with only one hit and no runs over 4.1 innings on Friday. Ford may have a few innings in him today, we’ll see.

First pitch is 1:30.
