Monday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Monday morning …

All accounts are that Donte Moncrief really helped himself at the NFL Combine. We’ll see how that translates for a guy who was projected as a third- or fourth-round pick going in.

Certainly, a 4.35 clocking in the 40, fastest among SEC wide receivers at the Combine, improves Moncrief’s stock. That was Moncrief’s unofficial time and really generated a lot of buzz for him on Twitter. later posted his official time at 4.40. That tied him for third-best at the Combine and still had him as the fastest SEC rep. Speed is a good thing, but Moncrief also tied for third in the vertical jump and tied for first in the broad jump.

Add the Eagles to the list of teams that could be interested in Moncrief.

It’s still a big group of wide receivers in the Class of 2014. Sammy Watkins (Clemson) and Marquise Lee (USC) did good things too.

There will still be the debate of whether Moncrief would have helped himself by playing his senior season at Ole Miss. It’s not that he would have changed much physically in a year, and NFL execs don’t care about his college stats, but the landscape of available receivers may or may not be different in 2015.

Donte Moncrief’s new “do” for the NFL Combine:

Gil Brandt was so impressed with Watkins he rates him as a possible No. 1 overall pick:

One of those in the mix is South Carolina end Jadeveon Clowney who would be just fine with straying not too far from Columbia for his NFL experience.

Speaking of the SEC, it’s the Old Guard that is most reppin’ the SEC at the NFL Combine:

In other news …

A fired-up Derek Mason, the new football coach at Vanderbilt, has a lot to say about his suspended assistant coach — then has only a little to say. …
