Ole Miss 5, La.-Monroe 4

Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco talked about wanting to see more toughness from his team at his preseason presser.

He saw that Tuesday when the Rebels overcame a 4-3 deficit in the ninth with two runs.

It was a similar situation as the one Ole Miss faced on Sunday when it was down 6-4 in the ninth and was unable to threaten against Georgia State and suffered its first loss.

It’s interesting to note that the ninth inning toughness was shown almost exclusively by newcomers.

Sophomore Holt Perdzock had the only hit in the inning.

The rally started with a one-out walk to pinch-hitter Colby Bortles, a freshman. Then Perdzock singled, and freshman Errol Robinson was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Freshman Dalton Dulin then reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Will Jamison, who had come on to run for Bortles.

With runners at the corners and two outs, junior college transfer Braxton Lee reached on a throwing error, and Perdzock scored the game-winner.

Auston Bousfield had a two-run home run in the first inning, and Sikes Orvis was 3-for-3.

Starting pitcher Jacob Waguespack gave up four hits and four runs — all earned — in 4.0 innings, but Matt Denny threw three innings of one-hit, scoreless relief with no walks.

Freshman Wyatt Short got the win in relief, throwing two-thirds of an inning with no hits, no walks, no runs and one strikeout.

Ole Miss is 7-1 and faces La.-Monroe against Wednesday at 4.
