Friday Football Notebook

Media were able to watch football today, and so I did.

A few observations …

Jeremy Liggins is still with quarterbacks. The last time we watched practice he was in a green no-contact jersey. Today he was not. Not that he really needs extra protection, especially from the third-team defense he was running against while I was there before drifting over to baseball to get some other things done.

Liggins was sacked once, but when he takes off on a designed run, which he did a couple of times, there’s forward movement.

He knows how to handle a football, and I still think Liggins is an intriguing short-yardage option whether taking the snap himself or perhaps as a running back. We’ve not seen him practice the latter, but we didn’t see Robert Nkemdiche do it either before he had several runs against Mississippi State. …

Speaking of quarterbacks, freshman Kendrick Doss, also in a red jersey, had a nice throw over the middle to Cale Luke who made a nifty catch in traffic, with Kailo Moore the primary defender, then got to the sideline and to the goalline. I’m thinking the play was 60 or 70 in yards. Luke, a walk-on, is a redshirt freshman and the son of Tom Luke, assistant AD for player development, the nephew of Matt Luke, OL coach and co-offensive coordinator. …

Quarterbacks video here:

First offensive line today was left tackle Laremy Tunsil, left guard Justin Bell, center Ben Still, right guard Daronte Bouldin and right tackle Austin Golson. …

In a small group drill with a couple of DLs against OLs and a running back, redshirt freshman Herbert Moore shed the block of Austin Golson and made a big play for no gain. Moore is a must-follow on Twitter if you’re not already. …

In that same drill there was some nice power running by redshirt freshman RB Jordan Wilkins …

Running backs in a blocking drill here:

Golson, coming back from shoulder surgery, held his own later in a one-on-one drill against hard-rushing transfer DE Fadol Brown, and Golson showed a little attitude in the process, pushing away Brown at the end of the play.
