Ole Miss 4, Missouri 3, Game 1

A dominating performance by Josh Laxer out of the pen. He struck out three of the five batters he faced including a called strikeout to end the game.

Laxer came in with a man on first, a one-run lead and one out in the eighth. He immediately got a strikeout, then Will Allen threw out the runner at second for the third out.

Here’s Laxer:

It was a nice turnaround for Laxer who gave up the game-tying home run in Saturday’s first game at South Carolina. The Rebels went on to lose in the 10th.

Chris Ellis looked a little shaky at times tonight but pitched around five hits and had some good defense behind him. There were a lot of line outs on both sides, hard-hit balls that went for nothing.

Ellis walked two, struck out five and gave up only one run, unearned.

Here’s Ellis:

The Tigers got three straight hits and two runs off Ole Miss relievers Wyatt Short and Preston Tarkington causing Mike Bianco to go to Laxer sooner than he would have liked.

Ole Miss took a 3-0 lead in the first with a 2-run home run from Austin Anderson, a solo shot from Sikes Orvis.

Missouri’s John Miles settled down after that, giving up a run in the third but nothing else. That run in the third turned out to be the game winner.

Miles had been set to start the Saturday game but Missouri Friday starter Brett Graves (3-1, 1.30) was hit by a ball in the head during warm-ups. He had some dizziness, we were told, but is expected to pitch this weekend, probably in Game 3.
