Monday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Monday morning …

Today begins the final week of spring football at Ole Miss with the Grove Bowl set for Saturday morning. Here’s what Saturday looks like weather-wise.

The college baseball polls will come out later today. I suspect a good tumble for the Rebels who reached No. 13 in Baseball America after last weekend’s sweep against Missouri. They’ve now lost four straight after getting swept at Alabama.

All the close games that were swinging the Rebels’ way earlier swung for the opponents this week. Ole Miss lost a two-run game to Southern Miss followed by two one-run games and a two-run game at Alabama. …

If you’re a Florida fan I bet you really don’t want to see Kentucky in the Final Four. It would be a championship game meeting. Not only is Kentucky peaking, something that began in the SEC tournament in Atlanta, but it’s extremely hard to beat one good team three times in one season much less four. Kentucky had the ball with a chance to lead in the final minute when Florida held on to beat the Cats for the SEC tournament title. …

When I watch Julius Randle I usually think, “That kid was playing at somebody’s high school last year.” Anyway, it wasn’t Randle but Aaron Harrison who hit the game-winner against Michigan. It’s been a great tournament with lots of competitive games, the Kentucky-Michigan finish was another classic.

I haven’t gotten to watch much TV coverage of the tournament. I was doing baseball Friday night and missed the Michigan flop that was pivotal in helping the Wolverines get by Tennessee. I caught a good bit of both games Sunday, though, and was reminded that I enjoy Charles Barkley on the set. I think CBS goes overboard with four people, much like the NFL network broadcast teams of the day, but Barkley and Kenny Smith play off one another well. It’s informative and entertaining.

Tennessee’s run creates an interesting conversation about SEC basketball. It’s still bad when compared to the best leagues. That Florida and Kentucky are in the Final Four is not particularly stunning. You knew Kentucky had this potential. Tennessee is a different story. Near the end of the regular season they were just one in a lump of teams trying to climb to fourth in the standings and earn that double bye in Atlanta.

The SEC was better than last year but still average and needs to shot of adrenalin that Bruce Pearl will bring.

It will be fun to see what the next couple of weeks bring for Cuonzo Martin. Will it be a raise and extension at Tennessee, or will it be a change of address to Marquette? …

On the ladies’ side, Arkansas reaches into the broadcast world and makes a non-traditional hire with analyst Jimmy Dykes

Good morning to all………….I caught the last 4 innings on Sat. night and you can hang that one on Bianco………The reliever with the zero era fans two in the seventh I believe and Bianco pulls him………..Not understanding that move………..What is it about the state of Alabama and Ole Miss………We always seem to be the step child. That needs to change!!!

Heck Flareb! You Sharkfins are the stepchildren in your own State….you need to fix that before you worry about Alabama….hehe.

Could it be a SEC match up for College basketball championship this season? To college baseball i feel the rebel weaknes is up the middle with Robinson at SS and Overby at 2nd, both weak at the bat, the Florida boys are coming thru for the rebels this season, only one Mississippi in starting lineup..M

PA…you got that right. Horrible call which eliminated the Vols
Must be a lot of disappointed LSU Tiger fans after they got swept by Florida. South Carolina also got a sweep over Tenn.
I expect the Rebels to get back in the winning column this week with 4 games at home.
