Roster Shuffling

Derrick Millinghaus was granted his release from the Ole Miss basketball program on Wednesday. He won’t be the only departure.

Exactly what the comings and goings will look like won’t be known until we see how many Andy Kennedy signs in the spring signing period which begins next Wednesday, April 16. He says he wants to add two or three, but that’s a fluid number.

In our story today Kennedy talks about why change is necessary on a college basketball roster, and Ross Bjork talks about why he supports it.

From the Mother Ship, Roster Shuffling.

There’s a perception that the meaningful talent is gone after the fall signing period. That’s not necessarily true.

Junior college guys tend to be more available in the spring. Many of them don’t sign in the fall because of uncertain academics. In addition to juco guys Kennedy is involved with a couple of post-graduate players.

Coaches also look to programs that have had coaching changes. Sometimes players who signed with one school in the fall see that school change coaches. Some players are granted a release from that school if they seek one.

Recruiting is about relationships, and a coach may pick up a player on the rebound that he got to know but failed to sign the first go round.

These are the rainbows Kennedy is chasing, and in a week we’ll see if there’s gold at the end of any of them.

“uncertain academics” . See Seth, I told you junior college is for players with troubled grades. No apology needed.
