Final: Ole Miss 12, Georgia 2

A very strong start to an important weekend for Ole Miss.

The Rebels had 14 hits, 13 of them singles. Georgia pitching also contributed six walks. Austin Anderson, Auston Bousfield and Errol Robinson each had two hits for the Rebels. Anderson had a double in the sixth innings, the only extra-base hit for Ole Miss.

It’s Fireworks Friday so I didn’t have time to listen to Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco but was able to hear a couple of players. Here’s Bousfield:

There was good news for the Rebels in the SEC West tonight. MSU, which began the night a game behind Ole Miss, lost at home to Tennessee. That’s in essence a three-game lead for Ole Miss against MSU since the Rebels have the tie-breaker. That could change if the tie involves multiple teams, but if it’s just Ole Miss and MSU head-to-head, it’s a big advantage for the Rebels with five conference games left.

Also, Texas A&M, which was three games back, lost at Arkansas. LSU and Alabama were rained out and will play two tomorrow.

Chris Ellis didn’t dominate Georgia but did hold down the Bulldogs’ runs. Georgia began the night hitting .231 — last in the SEC — but got 10 hits against Ellis — a .357 average on the night . He went 6.2 innings, walked two and struck out two.

Here’s Ellis:

Look for at least three more Mississippi State players to go pro today. Yeah, probably no black bears get picked other than Moncrieff.

  • Nigel Gruff

Hey, looking at the silver lining…no black bears were arrested last night. Well as far as the public knows, but we all know how things get swept under the rug.

  • Killer_Beeze

W0W…regardless of who you are–even a pup–you have to be impressed with the pitching & hitting last night by the Diamond Rebs. The Rebels are now 2 games ahead of Miss Stake and have sole possession of first place in the West. A sweep of the real Dawgs would be nice.
It’s a good time to be a Rebel.

Baseball is the only one of the big three that doesn’t cheat in recruiting as much. I consider baseball THE best pure sport. I like the black bear’s pitching. Ellis is a sure 1st round pick. They’ve earned the right to host. A bad time in Hoover could ruin it. Stay sharp!

Moncrieff got lucky to get on the Colts…with the way Vick Ballard runs the ball, I’ll put one on one coverage on Moncrieff.

    • TheGiantRebel

Where was Ballard last year? Oh yeah he got hurt in practice. He’ll be riding the bench behind Richardson (if he can get thru practice this year).

  • Nigel Gruff

Todd McShey said of Moncrieff…Can he break away from press coverage? In the Egg Bowl, State shut him down, completely, because they were physical with him…locking him up at the line of scrimmage. He will have to learn to be physical, something he wasn’t…in Freeze’s offense….he said it, I didn’t.

    • TheGiantRebel

check your pants they are on fire! lol… so he is basing his assessment of Moncrief on one game? how about the 2012 egg bowl then? 3 td’s 173 yards

**ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay calls Ole Miss WR Donte Moncrief “one of the most impressive workout freaks that you’ve ever seen at the wide receiver position.** I saw a lot of other good comments

      • Nigel Gruff

No, McShay was merely using the 2013 Egg Bowl as an example …he also showed film of the Alabama game. His point was that Moncrieff struggles against physical corners.

        • Seth Mohundro

He struggles with physical corners? HA! You are hilarious. You remember 2 years ago when State had the ‘best’, ‘most physical’ corner in the country in Jonathan Banks? Remember how Donte took him to school? I bet you don’t want to remember but I know you do. Does that sound like a guy that struggles against physical corners? In fact, every review except for one that I have read since he got drafted last night says that he is the most physically imposing receiver in the draft and is going to be a real asset for Andrew Luck. I don’t have to explain this to you but I will. He has a daughter that he is doing this for so that he can assure that she can eat. That is something I’m sure you have never had to deal with. He is a small-town Mississippi boy who has more passion for this game and for his daughter, Malayna, than you have ever felt in your life. I assure you his motor is running at full speed. He is hungry to get to work and try to get a Super Bowl now. How about you actually learn things about the person you are talking about before you lie about them. By the way, if you are interested in draft picks from each school, Ole Miss is far ahead of MSU.

Better check your pants for doo doo stains and your nose…Pinocchio…LMAO!!!

  • Nigel Gruff

Black bears in the driver’s seat…don’t choke it up, now. SEC. tournament can help or hurt.

  • Nigel Gruff

I think Bo Wallace can be a first round pick in 2015!!!! The arena leagues are starved for QBs.

  • Nigel Gruff

McShay’s other point was that Moncrieff in 2012 was different than in 2013…like he didn’t try as hard. I believe his words were, Moncrieff sometimes acts like he doesn’t want to be out there in 2013.

  • Nigel Gruff

Kiper said Moncrieff’s talent is off the charts, but I worry about his mental approach. Is his motor what it needs to be?

    • TheGiantRebel

I worry about your obsession with EVERYTHING related to Ole Miss. Ty focusing on your own team and maybe your life will be happier.

  • Nigel Gruff

I am happy…my life is great and hopefully I can keep posting on this blog for long, long time. I’m just a very funny guy with a wit that cuts like a Dak Prescott run through a black bear defense.

  • Nigel Gruff

2 items here…#1. If you read it thoroughly you would have noticed that McShay talked about 2013. #2. Banks was not a physical DB and he also had a torn meniscus in his left knee in the 2012 Egg Bowl. Face the facts, you’re in denial and your reading comprehension skills are sorely lacking.

    • Seth Mohundro

Everything I read was from the reporters who have followed the NFL a long time and a couple of Indianapolis reporters. If you would educate yourself a little, you would realize that he is actually one of the best receivers in the draft. He is a physical receiver and you are making excuses for Banks. He had just won the best DB award and he talked trash the WHOLE week leading up to the game and Donte taught him that actions speak louder than words. You sorely lack reading skills.

  • Nigel Gruff

Seth, you need to take your grievances up with Todd McShay, for he is the one who said that Moncrieff struggles with physical corners. It wasn’t I that said it. Work on those comprehension skills.

    • Seth Mohundro

I saw where you said that and it doesn’t surprise me that he looks down on Ole Miss. We don’t get enough credit for the draft picks we produce. I just fear that you believe him. You should know better.

  • Nigel Gruff

On no! Black bears are going to choke, just when you thought that the regional was a sure thing.

  • Nigel Gruff

Black bears can’t stand to hear the truth. We will see if Moncrieff even makes the 53 man roster come August or is it now 47?

    • Seth Mohundro

Don’t underestimate him. He is a hungry young player with tremendous upside as McShay put it.

  • Nigel Gruff

Black bears, don’t look now, but you’d best win tomorrow or you could end up tied with Mississippi State. Now wouldn’t that be something?

  • Nigel Gruff

Although I suppose black bears would win it due to head to head
