Ole Miss, Arkansas pitching matchup

First pitch against the Razorbacks will be 3 p.m. The game will be televised by CSS and also available on ESPN3.

Day 2 of the SEC tournament was a lot better for Ole Miss.

The Rebels took a big step forward in the national seed conversation with their own 7-2 win over Vanderbilt coupled with Florida’s elimination of South Carolina.

With the Rebels facing elimination for a second straight day Sam Smith (5-4, 3.30) will get the start.

Arkansas will start right-handed freshman Dominic Taccolini (2-0, 4.12). He will be making his 15th appearance and third start. Opponents are hitting only .198 against Taccolini, but he’s given up 10 walks in 24 innings. He threw 2.0 innings against Ole Miss in Game 2 in Oxford allowing no runs, no walks and striking out one. Ole Miss won 7-4.

Smith has been reliable for the Rebels most of the season, but his most recent starts haven’t been his best. That includes Game 3 against Arkansas when he lasted only three innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on six hits. Ole Miss lost 11-1.

Smith has gone less than five innings in three of his last four starts. The outlier in that stretch was Game 3 against Georgia when he went seven innings and allowed only one run in a game the Rebels won 2-1 in 10 innings.

Prior to a 2.2-inning start at Kentucky, Smith had gone at least six innings in eight straight starts and had not gone fewer than five innings in his other two starts.
