Rebels to open with Jacksonville State in regional opener

By John Davis, Oxford Citizen

The Oxford Regional is set and the Ole Miss Rebels know who will be coming to Oxford this weekend in the first stage of the NCAA Baseball Regionals.

The Rebels, winners of the Southeastern Conference Western Division and 41 games overall, will play Jacksonsville State (36-25) in the regional opener on Friday night at Oxford-University Stadium. Also coming to Oxford are Washington (39-15-1) of the Pac 12 and the ACC’s Georgia Tech (36-25). The Yellow Jackets won the ACC Tournament championship Sunday.

This is the second time the Huskies are coming to Oxford, having visited in 2004. Ole Miss was in a position to be one of eight national seeds, which means a super regional at home June 5-8, if three wins were accomplished this weekend.

Ole Miss is paired with Louisiana-Lafayette, the No. 6 national seed, in the super regionals. Mississippi State is a possible opponent in the super regionals. The Bulldogs were sent to Lafayette by the NCAA committee today. If the Bulldogs are able to upset the Ragin’ Cajuns, and Ole Miss wins, then the Bulldogs would visit Oxford.

Tickets are currently on sale. Ole Miss officials sent out an email to season ticket holders about the regionals once Oxford was selected as a host site Sunday night. The deadline for season ticket holders to purchase tickets is noon on Wednesday.

Here is a video of Mike Bianco talking about the regional, and hosting for the first time in five years.
