New Florida offensive coordinator Kurt Roper left Duke and David Cutcliffe to join the Gators. Roper was Cutcliffe’s quarterbacks coach with Eli Manning.
Here’s what Florida coach Will Muschamp had to say about spring drills and his early time with Roper.
“I was just very impressed in the interview process. Obviously your tape is your resume as a coach. The job he did at Duke was outstanding but a very simplistic approach, very positive. He brings an edge offensively and our guys really enjoy what we are doing. They’ve bought in totally to where we’re headed with this thing and I think he did a really good job in 15 days installing the majority of the offense.
“I think you’ve got to credit our entire staff and what they did, but Kurt’s a really good football coach. He’s exactly what David Cutliffe said he was, and all the people that I talked to about him as a ball coach. It’s all ball, that’s what he’s all about. Our kids really enjoy him, he’s got an edge to him that we needed offensively from his position to bring that confidence back to our kids. Our kids enjoyed practicing again. It’s just been fun to watch.”
Muschamp believes his quarterback Jeff Driskel, who appeared in only three games last season because of injuries, will thrive under Roper’s fast approach.
“It’s what Jeff was recruited to do, and that’s a lot of the reason we went to (the new offense). I think it’s a very good fit for him. I think he’s comfortable. Jeff’s going to have a very good year. I’m really excited about where we are and where we’re headed with him.”
