Kennedy taking his time in finding Rouco’s replacement

I caught up with Ole Miss basketball coach Andy Kennedy yesterday and asked him where he is in looking for a replacement for assistant coach Sergio Rouco who has left to join a new staff at South Florida.

It will be the second hire this spring for Kennedy, who will enter his ninth season as the Rebels’ coach.

“I haven’t done anything with it yet. I don’t feel a real necessity to make a move real quickly. I brought on Tony Madlock. When I get back from this meeting, then another excursion with a Nike coaches trip, once I get back from that I’ll get my arms around this and make some decisions moving into the July recruiting period.”

Having hired Madlock does not necessarily put Kennedy any farther along in this process, he said. With what new coach on board and another coming, he wants to make sure he gets the right fit.

“One thing, as coaches we all talk about developing team chemistry, which is a work in progress throughout the course of a six- or seven-month season. I think the same thing relates to your staff. Chemistry is important. I wanted to bring Tony on, get to know him a little bit, find out really what his strengths and weakness are, along with Bill and myself and the people that I have in place that obviously I’m very comfortable with, then figure out what the next step is as far as bringing in the best staff that I can for our program.”
