From ESPN, good stuff here on Louisiana-Lafayette, which is “Baseball U” in Louisiana … at least for this year.
Actually, there’s a nice baseball history at ULL — and remember, regardless how you see the school’s name reference from its home base in the coming days, there is a hyphen involved — that includes many conference championships, 14 NCAA tournament trips in the last 26 years and an Omaha trip in 2000.
Had the Cajuns played in an RPI conference like the SEC, that number of NCAA trips would actually be higher.
They’ve done pretty good against the SEC this year, going 5-1. They won a weekend series against Alabama — in which they suffered their only SEC loss — beat LSU in a mid-week game in Baton Rouge and went 2-0 against Mississippi State in the regional.
The Cajuns are 57-8 right now. That’s eye-popping, but remember, many of those wins came in the Sun Belt Conference. ULL has shown it can play with anybody, but conference affiliation does bear mentioning.
Some other numbers of note: The Cajuns are 18-3 in games decided by one or two runs. While they have only eight losses, six of those have come at home, where they are 31-6.
