8-4 Practice Notes

Good work from John Davis who handled practice while I spoke to senior adults at First Baptist Oxford. Great group of folks and fantastic lunch. …

A few tid-bits from today’s workout.

– Today was the first day of full pads. DB C.J. Hampton, DL Issac Gross and CB Kailo Moore were in shorts because of unspecified injuries described as minor by Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze. DE Fadol Brown was in shorts because he tweaked an ankle during a punt protection drill, Freeze said.

– Freshman Sammie Epps has been moved from tight end to slot WR for this season. Whether he remains there will depend on how he matures physically, Freeze said. This is not terrible surprising. Epps’ frame (6-5, 215) is more suited to WR right now, and Freeze had already said he expected Epps to play some wide receiver.

– Freeze raved about WR Quincy Adeboyejo. A year ago Adeboyejo was an in-coming freshman that Freeze thought would be a “special” player at Ole Miss. He didn’t have many opportunities playing behind the other guys. Now it’s his opportunity, and Freeze likes his potential. A lot more on this in the video.

– Freeze was less enamored with his two redshirt freshmen vying to be Bo Wallace’s backup. Timing and ball-protection are issues right now.

Ryan Buchanan and DeVante Kincade will be the subject of tomorrow’s coverage in the Daily Journal.

It’s my guess that if something were to happen to Bo Wallace there would be a role for both of them. That, of course, could change in camp. Development and improvement are what camp’s about.

The Rebels will be back on the field tomorrow for a closed practice.
