8-15, Practice Notes

What we saw from today’s viewing periods …

Here’s Hugh Freeze:

Issac Gross out: What we didn’t see was Issac Gross. More on Gross’ status in the Freeze video. Basically he called it a flare-up but it’s worth keeping an eye on. Right now it’s Woodrow Hamilton and Bryon Bennett running 1 and 1A at nose.

Carlos Davis too: Freeze confirmed Davis’ torn ACL. It’s a big hit for special teams. Davis, a former walk-on, was set to return punts and also cover punts. He’ll have surgery soon and will have a redshirt year to use.

Offensive Line: Ben Still ran with the first team at center, Robert Conyers with the second team. Conyers also got some reps with the second team at right tackle. During those reps Fahn Cooper moved over to left tackle, and the center was Chase Hughes. Rod Taylor was getting second-team reps at both guards.

Quarterbacks: The primary QB work in the open periods involved a red zone drill at the 10-yard line going in. It was a “skeleton” drill with no defense across the ball. DeVante Kincade got the first back-up reps here, then Ryan Buchanan.

Special Teams: Didn’t see field goals. There was a lot of work on punt return in trying to slow down the other teams’ “gunner,” which is the speed guy designated to be the first guy down to the punt returner.

Other Notes: Freshman DE Marquis Haynes continues to run first team though Fadol Brown is back at practice. It will be interesting to see if that holds up, because there’s more potential for Haynes at 220 pounds to get pushed around in the run game than for Brown at 280 pounds. We haven’t seen live contact, so there’s no read on Haynes in the run game. … Mike Hilton was working with Huskies, not corners, when he was on my radar. … In one 11-on-11 drill Cliff Coleman and C.J. Hampton were sharing the second-team reps at free safety. … The second-team defensive line during the viewing periods was, from end to end, John Youngblood, Woodrow Hamilton, Lavon Hooks and Fadol Brown.
