8-18, Practice Notes

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze touches on several on-going competitions here most notably center. For the first time he mentioned slot receiver as a competition, thought not much of one. Sounds like Quincy Adeboyejo and Cody Core are both going to play.

Sounds like a good day for juco transfer Christian Russell at MLB. If he picks up the defense his speed will get him on the field.

The biggest news nugget of the presser was Freeze’s statement that he hopes to hear an update today from the NCAA regarding the waiver requests for transfers Christian Morris (OL) and Damore’ea Stringfellow.

Here’s Freeze:

A few observations from the media viewing periods at today’s practice. …

Freeze has mentioned more than once the inconsistency of Adeboyejo. Not with route-running, not with blocking or other things but with pass-catching.

Today Adeboyejo was sharing first-team reps at slot with Core. Seemed to me more were going to Core in the viewing periods.

Freeze praised Core’s camp last week. I thought Core looked really good in camp as a freshman, but to this point in his career, now a junior, he hasn’t stuck in an impact role.

Adeboyejo is a gifted athlete, and the Ole Miss will be better if he becomes a reliable slot receiver.

Looking at some defensive reserves, Cliff Coleman and C.J. Hampton have been sharing second-team reps at safety. That continued today. End Fadol Brown is still running second team and was sharing reps today with Channing Ward.

The starting corners were Senquez Golson and Mike Hilton. After Tee Shepard’s injury Freeze said Hilton would continue to get reps at Huskie behind Tony Conner. That was true for last Friday’s viewing periods, but today he was at corner.

Second-team corners right now at Derrick Jones and Kendarius Webster.
