Bell, Luke say corrections being made along OL

Ole Miss offensive lineman Justin Bell, the starter at right guard, told us Tuesday evening he thought the multitude of false starts against Boise State were more about first-game jitters for Ole Miss than what Boise was doing.

“They had a few move calls here and there, but regardless of that we’ve got to listen to our quarterback and hone in on his voice. It’s our job to be focused,” Bell said.

There was a lot of pre-snap movement along the Boise front that was new and not on any film the staff saw in preparation, OL coach Matt Luke said.

The Rebels used a silent count much of the second half and corrected the problem.

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze didn’t call out his line or backs specifically at his Monday presser but stressed that he wants to see more physicality in the run game.

“We kind of have had a sick feeling even though we won, at least at my position, so you want to try to get that corrected going into Game 2,” Luke said.

Luke said he’ll tinker with personnel a little more at Vanderbilt. He said he’ll use Robert Conyers a little more at center, and there will be more playing time for freshman guard Rod Taylor.

The heat is one consideration for that. Luke said he was not displeased with junior center Ben Still who battled Conyers for the starting job in camp.

“There were some good things. He adjusted well in the second half to some things we were doing. Obviously in your first game as a full-time guy there are going to be some mistakes,” Luke said.

Bell says there’s been great emphasis on the run game in practice this week.

“We’ve adjusted where we need to adjust, and we’re fixing to get it clicking,” he said.
