SEC Power Rankings

It’s hard to compare MSU and Ole Miss these days. I think State’s more physical on offense. This shows up in its rushing yards per game (246.3 to 146.5) and in tackles for loss allowed per game (3.83 for MSU to 6.67 for Ole Miss). Ole Miss is better on defense. This shows up in yards allowed (307.2 for Ole Miss to 428.8 for MSU) and points (11.8 for Ole Miss to 20.0 for MSU).

State’s getting a lot of national attention for having beaten three-straight top 10 teams right now, but part of that is timing. You don’t get the same bang for beating LSU right now. Also included in that stretch for MSU is how it whipped Texas A&M. Now Ole Miss has done the same thing and in a more difficult environment.

The two most impressive aspects of Ole Miss’ win at A&M was that the Rebels were not emotionally flat and that they so effectively handled what could have been the loudest environment they’ll face this season. Ole Miss could easily be No. 1 in this poll, but I’m keeping MSU here for a couple of reasons. One, I had them there last week, and while I think they’re equals I don’t want to make them share. Two, I think Auburn’s better than Texas A&M, and that’s MSU’s most recent body of work. The other thing to remember about these particular rankings is I’m seeing everything Ole Miss does and just judging MSU and other teams by video clips and word of mouth. That’s not true of AP and coaches poll voters. Some of them have seen both teams live. Many of them have seen neither live. It’s polling. The truth will play itself out on the field over the next six games.
