With five power conferences and four playoff spots, somebody was going to be left out. It was the Big 12 Conference and here’s why. …

There has been some question as to why the other weekly rankings are necessary. Here’s one reason. The playoff committee’s work is done after the bracket and its four remaining bowls are set.

In years past it’s been a matter of pride for Ole Miss and many other schools to see where they finish in the final top 25 rankings. The committee will have no rankings past those that come out today to set the bowls.

Ole Miss is No. 9 in the AP Top 25 today. If they beat TCU in the bowl game they could finish higher, perhaps in the top five. That would be nice to know, and they’ll never find that out from the playoff committee poll. …

Not everyone was happy with the college football playoff in the beginning:

The message of the day to the Big 12 Conference was “Get a championship game.”
