Here’s a South Florida blog’s take on the hiring of Tom Allen as defensive coordinator. Click me. It’s a nice promotion any time you go from position coach to coordinator. There’s also a risk involved. South Florida was 4-8 this year, 3-5 in the American Athletic Conference. It was the second season under former Western Kentucky coach Willie Taggart and just a two-win improvement from his 2-10 debut season.

Former Ole Miss assistant Kyle Roper made a move from the security of Duke in 2013 to Florida in 2014, and that didn’t work out. After a 23-20 Gators loss to South Carolina, Roper strongly denied the theory that his offense was handcuffed by head coach Will Muschamp. He also addressed picking up and starting over. …

Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin threw his name into the Muschamp for Defensive Coordinator sweepstakes but came up short as Muschamp was hired by Auburn. Sumlin addressed his coordinator vacancy late last week. …
