DJ Jones, the top rated defensive tackle in the junior college ranks, will be an Ole Miss Rebel. The 6-foot-2, 315 pound Jones said he will make it official later this morning from his home in South Carolina.
Jones, who made his official visit during the Egg Bowl, said he picked Ole Miss over Florida State and Alabama because of the opportunity to play for head coach Hugh Freeze and for defensive line coach Chris Kiffin. He referred to them both as “great.” Jones had been a pledge to Florida State.
“They just fit me,” Jones said adding the atmosphere for the Egg Bowl impressed. “It was crazy. That stadium got as loud as any in the SEC to me.”
Defensive tackle is a need area for the Rebels, and Jones, who has been compared to former LSU standout Booger McFarland, saw that need.
“That need is why they stayed as my top school,” Jones said.
EMCC quarterback Chad Kelly picked Ole Miss last week, but Jones said that Kelly didn’t make an impact on him because he already had the Rebels up high.
“I was heavy on Ole Miss before and I would say that it’s the same now,” Jones said. “But it is a great thing that we will be there together.”
As for him being friends with Butler CC linebacker Davon Durant, Jones said that was the case, but he didn’t want to put pressure on him, allowing Durant to make his own choice. Durant is currently considering Ole Miss as well as Arizona State and Oregon. Durant is rated as the No. 7 overall player in the JUCO recruiting rankings by ESPN.
