Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze confirmed yesterday that RB Mark Dodson and DB David Kamara are leaving the program. More departures are possible Freeze said without offering any specifics.

Dodson appears headed to Memphis. Frankly, he should have redshirted last year but didn’t. Dodson did some good things in two years at Ole Miss. His opportunities were few behind a couple of backs, I’Tavius Mathers and Jaylen Walton, who have more experience.

The running back position was quite crowded this season. Nobody really jumped up and grabbed the job in a run game that sputtered through inconsistent offensive line play.As it’s played out, Freeze felt like it was best for the run game to make a strong commitment to a lead back, and that’s been Jaylen Walton. Looks like Jordan Wilkins may have elevated himself to No. 2 though he’s probably closer to Mathers than Walton in the pecking order. …

Mississippi State played some good defense under Manny Diaz. He’s out to disprove the theory that you can’t go home again. Diaz, whose career sidetracked when he was fired at Texas, has been hired by Dan Mullen for a second time. …
