Thursday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Thursday morning …

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze told us Wednesday that he’s decided to keep Corey Batoon in his open full-time assistant position.

Batoon previously worked with Freeze at Arkansas State and was in an administrative role at Ole Miss before being moved to an interim position after Tom Allen left to become defensive coordinator at South Florida.

Batoon will coach the safeties. …

When temps drop and wind picks up it can only mean one thing:

While covering college football I’ve seen a lot of coaches fire staff. Never a pool boy. The the Kevin Sumlin “pool boy” thing is humorous if unfortunate for the pool cleaner. At least it looks like this college student is still able to clean other peoples’ pools.

Seems like Sumlin could have called in the pool boy for a private chat. By firing him on Twitter he elevated the matter to another level.

Maybe Sumlin was particularly edgy about that leaked information because if the timeline in this Baton Rouge Advocate blog post is true, it looks like Sumlin was speaking with his new defensive coordinator, John Chavis, minutes before Chavis was to lead the LSU defense — rather unsuccessfully — against Notre Dame in the Music City Bowl. …

Some bad news on the injury front for a local guy:

Elsewhere in the SEC it appears no pool boys were harmed as Georgia coach Mark Richt finalized his plans with a new offensive coordinator. We’ll see if that impacts wide receiver Van Jefferson, who had been weighing options between Georgia and Ole Miss before extending his recruitment. …

Speaking of recruiting, and somewhere someone always is, SaturdayDownSouth.com takes a look at the current class of Ole Miss commits and juco signees. …
