Rebels in AP Top 25

Ole Miss is No. 17 in the final AP Top 25.

That’s a drop of eight spots following the 42-3 Peach Bowl loss to TCU. The Horned Frogs are No. 3.

There had been talk of Ole Miss players of a possible top five finish had they won the bowl game.

There was talk during the season about what role do these polls play now after the coming of the College Football Playoff committee’s poll? Obviously the committee’s poll takes over once it starts being released each month. However, the committee does not have a poll after the bowl games. The AP Top 25 helps bring closure to the season.

Among SEC teams, Alabama is four, Georgia is nine — one spot below Georgia Tech — Mississippi State is 11 and Missouri is 14.

Behind Ole Miss, Auburn is 22.

A couple of other notables:

Boise State, which Ole Miss defeated soundly in the season opener at the Georgia Dome, went on to a 12-2 season is No. 16. Memphis — the Rebels were sluggish here the week before Alabama — finished 10-3 and is No. 25 in the final poll.
