Monday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Monday morning …

I didn’t make the basketball game in Fayetteville Saturday night. Come Sunday afternoon I still felt like I’d made the trip after chaperoning a Disciple Now weekend.

It was a great couple of days with a lot of good young folks …

The Ole Miss women’s basketball team dropped a 58-49 decision at No. 12 Texas A&M on Sunday to give the Rebels a split this week with No. 18 Georgia and the Aggies.

Ole Miss is 4-2 in conference play. There are 16 games. Eight wins, most likely, gets you into the NCAA tournament. It’s remarkable that the Ole Miss women are having this discussion right now.

Next game is Thursday night at home against Mississippi State. …

One day Senquez Golson’s football-playing career will be complete. Lots of guys transition to analyst work after that:

I will leave Tuesday morning for Mobile and will spend a couple of days there at Senior Bowl practices catching up with Senquez Golson, Cody Prewitt and the Mississippi State players in the game.

Some pretty good NFL players have emerged from the Senior Bowl:

I’ll have notes and video on Golson and Prewitt here. …

It’s possible the Nick Saban-Lane Kiffin experiment, a highly successful one, could be over after one season. If so, Ole Miss defensive line coach Chris Kiffin will be 1-0 against his brother for the foreseeable future …

A lot of people who didn’t know Green Bay reserve tight end Brandon Bostick yesterday know him today because of this.

The first thing I thought about was LSU’s on-sides kick recovery against Ole Miss in 2009. Dexter McCluster, like Bostick, was a member of the “hands team” then.

Two big differences: One, McCluster, unlike Bostick, had handled the ball all season. Two, McCluster didn’t attempt to field the ball. He was coached to let it go through if he thought it was coming too fast or too hot to handle.

Bostick is a second-year guy out of Newbury College who had only two catches during the regular season.

It seems a tough spot for a guy who hadn’t touched the ball much. Presumably you work on those situations in practice, but really, how much time do you give to on-side kick recovery? In Green Bay, probably a little bit more moving forward. …
