Two huge losses in the college basketball world this week with the deaths of former coaches Dean Smith of North Carolina and Jerry Tarkanian of UNLV and a couple of other stops. I preferred Smith’s style, but there’s no denying the contributions of both:

Former LSU basketball coach Dale Brown has pretty much stayed out of the media since retiring in the late 1990s. Those who remember him find that hard to believe. They discussed Brown’s encouraging email to current LSU coach Johnny Jones, one of his former players, after the Tigers’ near-miss against Kentucky Tuesday night. …
