Rebels at UCF this weekend

One way to combat snow and ice is to leave town. That’s what Ole Miss baseball is doing this weekend as it heads to Orlando for three games against Central Florida.

Ole Miss swept UCF in Oxford last year but not without drama.

The Rebels won the first two games of the series in walk-off fashion. John Gatlin had a single in the 13th inning of the first game, and Will Allen had a solo home run to straight-away center field in the 10th inning of the second game.

The Rebels won the third game 9-2.

This season UCF has been an improved offensive team in a 7-0 start while Ole Miss has relied more on pitching and defense in a 5-2 start.

Most of that solid pitching has come from the Friday and Saturday starters, Christian Trent and Brady Bramlett.

Bramlett’s success has not necessarily been a surprise, but it’s been welcome and needed especially after a season-ending shoulder problem for juco transfer Sean Johnson.

Bramlett was effective as a freshman in 2013 but sat out last season after labrum surgery.

“I knew coming back in that I had a lot to prove. I’ve got a lot of self-imposed pressure. I knew coming that this would be a special year not only for myself but for the team,” he said.

Bramlett had 11 strikeouts last Saturday against Wright State. He and Trent have combined for 34 strikeouts so far, more than any other 1-2 pitching combination in the SEC.

Bramlett has a 1.50 ERA, Trent a 1.64.

He’s been encouraged by his fast start after a year away.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a relief. Just feeling proud, knowing I’m working my tail off and just trying to keep that going forward,” he said.
