Monday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Monday morning …

The Howell and Gillom trophies will be awarded this morning at 11:30 at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in Jackson.

The guess here is Ole Miss guard Stefan Moody wins on the men’s side and Mississippi State freshman Victoria Vivians wins on the women’s side.

I think Vivians gets the nod over Tia Faleru based on voters choosing the best player on the best team. She is deserving, and I almost voted Vivians. When I thought about I went with Faleru based on the fact that she averaged a double-double in SEC play and leads the league in rebounding. Vivians leads in scoring, and Faleru is third.

Outside of scoring Vivians doesn’t impact the game in the same way that Faleru does. Scoring, though, is pretty important. …

That Ole Miss baseball loss yesterday was the worst since losing 18-4 to Auburn in 2010 and the worst non-conference loss under Mike Bianco since Bianco’s second game as coach when the Rebels lost to Central Arkansas 18-6. …

Looks like Marshall Henderson will return to the scene of one of his greatest college triumphs later this week:

There’s a popular move these days to remove the term “Lady” from the names of women’s college sports teams. It’s popular in most places anyway. Or perhaps it’s just uncontested in most places. It’s very much contested in Knoxville even though the administration announced in November that it’s most prominent women’s team — Lady Vols basketball — would keep Lady in its names. …
