Tuesday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Tuesday morning …

Andy Kennedy’s name was tossed into the Tennessee conversation Monday by CBS’ Gary Parrish. So was Rick Barnes’ and it looks like to recently-made-former Texas coach will leave one Big Orange UT for the other.

Parrish says the Tennessee job trumps the Ole Miss job in basically every way. Not sure I’m all in with that. Obviously Tennessee has a larger budget for athletics and has a larger fan base. The arena argument that Ole Miss lost for years it will win once the new arena opens. It already has a state-of-the-art basketball practice facility. Kennedy’s making almost $2 million a year. He’ll make that or more with his next raise. If he were to leave, and Ross Bjork found himself needing to make a hire the salary would be at least $2 million. That’s the new normal for basketball.

Ole Miss has become a better job while Kennedy has been its coach. Part of that has been his consistent 20-win seasons. Now he’s been to the tournament twice in three years this year with a transitioning roster much like the one he’ll have next year. He’s advanced a round each time.

The other part of making the job better has been the commitment the athletics department’s commitment to pay better salaries.

There are some things the Tennessees, Texas, etc. will always have that Ole Miss never will. Greater numbers equal greater resources. The SEC Network and the money it generates helps close that gap, however. …

SaturdayDownSouth.com lists Ole Miss’ Jeremy Liggins among its SEC players who could make an impact at a new position this fall. Liggins is the only former quarterback who is becoming a tackle. He’ll still be used in some short-yardage QB formations. …
