A trip to the postseason, the first in five seasons for the Ole Miss women’s basketball team, was just one of the reasons Matt Insell got his contract extended Wednesday.
Insell, who just completed his second season as the head coach of the Rebels, continued to show improvement and produce memorable moments along the way. After being picked to finish last in the SEC standings prior to the season, Insell led the Rebels to 19 overall wins, and a 7-9 mark during the regular season in the SEC.
Ole Miss also advanced to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament, winning two games before falling to his father’s Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders in the third round. The 19 wins were seven more than his first season, and the most since former coach Carol Ross coached the team and led the Rebels to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament in 2007.
“We started this journey two years ago and we have made major strides, but the best is yet to come,” Insell said in a statement. “I am excited about the future of our program and I am grateful to Rebel Nation for the support they have shown our program and staff over the past two seasons. As we move forward, we’ll need your continued support as we transition into The Pavilion at Ole Miss next season.”
