Ole Miss at Arkansas State

How big is tonight’s game at Arkansas State?

Big enough that Christian Trent could come out and pitch an inning or two. Sikes Orvis was joking about that in this video, but it may not be a joke.

It’s not that Trent might be a go-to guy in the bullpen necessarily. It’s that Mike Bianco told us yesterday that he drew his “line in the sand” some time ago on the remaining non-conference games.

He didn’t address specifically whether he might call on Trent or any of his weekend starters — Scott Weathersby is officially in that group now — for extra duty, but he said he’ll “do whatever it takes to win the game.”

Arkansas State, coached by former MSU player and assistant Tommy Raffo now in his seventh season, is struggling, 23-26 overall, 10-16 and in 10th place in the 11-team Sun Belt Conference. The Red Wolves have an RPI of 113.

The Rebels have won the last five games in the series, but this isn’t always an easy game for Ole Miss.

Here’s Bianco:

Ole Miss will start juco transfer left-hander Mitchel Babb (2-0, 5.66). Arkansas State will counter with its own lefty, Collin Nord (0-1, 11.12). Nord probably won’t be in the game long. He’s only thrown 5.2 innings this season.

Arkansas State, like Ole Miss, has won four straight. The Red Wolves are coming off a Sun Belt sweep of Texas State over the weekend.

The Red Wolves are hitting .277 with a 4.58 team ERA.
