Ole Miss baseball won’t begin the next phase of postseason, the NCAA tournament, before next Friday at a site and time to be announced Monday.
It’s a different sort of feel right now but not an altogether bad one.
Of course there’s time for players to rest, and Mike Bianco talks about that too. There’s also the possibility of gaining a little rust by the time the Rebels take the field in Game 1 of a regional. At that time they will have been off for 10 days.
The plan this week is to rest starting pitchers Christian Trent, Brady Bramlett and Scott Weathersby. They won’t throw off the mound before next week.
Another plus side of the ledger is the chance to slow down and refocus. This kind of layoff gives the team a chance to work on fundamentals, situational defense and other plays that it doesn’t get to practice much when the games come twice during the week and three times on the weekends.
The last round of projections at D1Baseball.com had the Rebels in Fort Worth for an anticipated TCU regional. That’s an interesting location given the recent history between these two very solid programs both in the postseason and regular season.
The truth is no potential location is off the table including those out west.
Bianco says he doesn’t talk about possible destinations with his team.
