Ole Miss commits finish with ‘perfect’ season

By John Davis, Oxford Citizen

For those that may not have followed the Oxford Chargers closely on the baseball diamond in 2015, there are three future Rebels on a team that won 35 games and the MHSAA Class 5A state title.

Pitchers Jason Barber, Houston Roth and shortstop Grae Kessinger are commits for the 2016 class. All three are expected to sign with Ole Miss this coming fall. Barber, who was named the Oxford Citizen Player of the Year today, finished the season with a 0.00 ERA. That’s right, he didn’t allow an earned run in the 78 innings he pitched.

Barber, who can throw in the low 90s, finished with 111 strikeouts against just 14 walks. He and Roth combined to walk just one batter in 14 innings of work against George County in the 5A title series. Roth is 25-2 in his 27 starts on a varsity level, with his lone loss coming on a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Kessinger is the grandson of former Ole Miss skipper Don Kessinger. He is the son of Kevin Kessinger, who also played baseball at Ole Miss. Kessinger was spectacular in the field for the Chargers in the title series, gobbling up ball after ball. The trio are set to play on a team headed to McAlester, Oklahoma that features some of the best players in the state.
