Former Ole Miss coach, Brewer expects big year for Rebels

Aside from a little radio here and there, Billy Brewer never made his way to an analyst’s chair after coaching.

It would have been appointment television for sure. It might have been hard for Brewer to hang on for too many years, because he would no doubt answer each question from the heart with no feelings spared.

I had a great sit-down with Brewer on his porch this morning, a visit that will be the impetus for a few stories in the days ahead.

Here’s a small sampling.

There’s a lot of excitement for Ole Miss this season from a lot of different directions, some this summer having the Rebels just outside the top 10.

Well, Brewer is on board with the expectations. Here’s what he had to say about Hugh Freeze:

He’s here at the right time, right place. They’re doing a great job recruiting, everything’s in the right place. They know what they want on defense, they know what they want on offense, what kind of players they want and what they want to do with them when they get them here. They’ve done the best job I think in the SEC.”

Will the recruiting translate to wins? Brewer thinks so and not just for one big year.

Everybody’s cutting their eyes to them. These guys have done a wonderful job. Well, they’re having success, and they’re beating everybody. That’s the deal now. Not only are they beating people, they’re going to be playing for championships quick, pretty quick. I would not be surprised if this is a banner year. This is going to be a big year.”

Thanks, PA. It’s good to here from Coach Brewer. I look forward to the rest of the conversation. My outlook is not as rosy. I think the defense has the potential to be better. I’m worried about the offense. So much depends on the QB, and all three seem average.

PA…would’ve been great if this had been a video. I’ve always liked and admired Coach Brewer. Oh, did you get a chance to play ”one hole” golf at Billy’s place? :))

Beeze, I didn’t play golf but did enjoy the porch. He’s got a lot land and solitude right in the city. Lots of trees and shade. Doug, I think the QB play will be there. Biggest question mark will be offensive line, followed by cornerback. They have to run the ball and protect whoever is quarterback. The corners have a lot of ability but have to get game reps and hit their stride quickly.
