Centers of attention

There are five returning offensive linemen at Ole Miss, but there’s a real competition going on for the starting job at center.

Yesterday Robert Conyers took most of the snaps with the ones.

Ben Still is the incumbent and is locked in a battle with Conyers and senior Justin Bell, who has 26 consecutive offensive line starters, most of them at right guard.

The continued attention to the OL in recruiting is starting to show in the talent and depth that is accumulating at the position.

Most of this talent is inexperienced right now, but the group has more numbers and growing confidence from the coaches.

There’s been a lot of excitement from the coaches for sophomore Rod Taylor, who is currently running with the ones at right guard.

“It’s not his yet,” offensive coordinator Dan Werner said when asked about Taylor at right guard.  “It’s just I think Justin can help us some at center. Rod’s been doing the little things off the field – accountability, discipline, showing up on time and doing the little things right. Athleticism and talent aren’t Rod’s issues. He’s got to learn how to focus and be able to finish, but he’s a very talented young man.”

Hugh Freeze has called Conyers, who is also working at tackle, and Bell his “swing guys” along the line.

From the Mother Ship, centers and swing guys.
