Some love for the Ole Miss defense. Players have told us all month they believe they can be better than last year. SaturdayDownSouth is buying. I think it’s quite possible. It depends on whether the corners are the real deal and how the Rebels improve in stopping the run. I do think the personality of this defense changes. The Rebels got a lot of stops last year with interceptions, 10 of their 22 from Senquez Golson. I think this defense becomes one that forces the offense to punt more often. …

There will be a lot of Mississippi flavor on the field at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium Saturday, and not all of it will be with the Rebels. …

Not good news for Alma Mater U:

Brett Favre stopped by the South Carolina practice on Saturday. I guess it was an open practice. This caught my attention because I covered Favre’s last two seasons at Southern Miss and have kept an eye on his career. I wonder how he would have gotten along as a starter under Steve Spurrier. …

Speaking of quarterbacks. As Game Week arrives there’s no clarity to the picture at Alabama, and the Crimson Tide could play two in its opener against Wisconsin. What are the chances that four quarterbacks play when Ole Miss visits Alabama in Week 3? …

If you’re planning a get-away to Jonesboro on Sept. 12 and hoping for low-price or free tickets for the Arkansas State home game against Missouri don’t expect them. This from an A-State administrator:

USA Today columnist Dan Wolken says four, not eight, is the best number for the College Football Playoff. …

A couple of arrests last week for Arkansas football. Nobody you’ve heard of. …

LSU has been picked all over the map this preseason including two times — by Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit — to at least reach the championship game. Corso says LSU will win it all …
