Gross out for year, other notes

Ole Miss nose tackle Issac Gross will have season-ending neck surgery, the school announced today.

Gross will redshirt and is expected to return for the 2016 season.

A senior from South Panola, Gross played off the bench in Saturday’s season opener and finished with three tackles and a half tackle for loss.

He has 114 tackles and 27 1-2 tackles for loss for his career.

With Gross gone junior college transfer D.J. Jones ran second team at nose tackle in today’s practice.

In other news, every viewable rep for the offense today included Rod Taylor at left tackle. Some of them included extra “coaching up” for Taylor with OL coach Matt Luke intensely driving home a point about this responsibility or that on this play or that.

Laremy Tunsil was dressed and at practice and at times walked the sideline encouraging his teammates.

Freeze told us Monday that linebacker C.J. Johnson, suspended for the opener, would play. He felt like safety C.J. Hampton, also suspended, would also play, but he left open the possibility that Hampton would not.

Hampton was in attendance, but I did not see him in any reps.

A portion of the viewable periods was dedicated to tempo offense, good on good, as Houston Nutt liked to say.

Johnson did not participate in the first round of reps but ran with the first team on its second go through.
