Lots of talk this week about the Laquon Treadwell-Vernon Hargreaves matchup.
Ole Miss’ top wide receiver and Florida’s top cornerback are both juniors and are both projected first-round picks in next spring’s draft.
Hargreaves is listed at 5-11, so he’ll give up about three inches to Treadwell, but speed and athleticism can make up for a lot of things, and Hargreaves isn’t lacking there.
The two met at the Under Armour game in 2013 and have kept in touch through social media.
Hargreaves was already committed to Florida, and Treadwell was uncommitted when Hargreaves tried to attract him to Gainesville.
Treadwell has shown no effects of the gruesome injuries that cut short his sophomore season last November and appears to be living up to his promises to come back just as good, even better.
He leads the Rebels with 22 catches for 322 yards. His one touchdown was a thing of beauty, leaping above Alabama cornerback Cyrus Jones and then snatching away a well-thrown pass before Jones knew what was going on.
While everyone looks at Treadwell and Hargreaves they’re likely to cancel out one another. The game could be decided by what Ole Miss’ other receivers get done.
If so, that’s an advantage for the Rebels. It’s been a deep, talented and productive group so far this season.
