After Egg Column

Hugh Freeze could have gloated Saturday night but instead used Bully’s pulpit to slightly rebuke media and to promote both of Mississippi’s SEC football programs. It’s not a bad idea.

First, college football in Mississippi needs promoting. It has taken giant leaps forward in comparison to not-too-distant times when fans in August counted wins trying to find bowl eligibility. You can throw Southern Miss into that discussion too. Todd Monken has lifted that program from the ashes to the Conference USA championship game.

Secondly, success can be fleeting, and as Mark Richt and Les Miles have shown, the definition of success changes. It’s changed in Mississippi. Simply becoming bowl eligible is no longer the goal.

With that in mind, be thankful for wins, most of them came with a great degree of difficulty. Be thankful for staff stability, keep your head down and push forward.

With three losses, he has no reason to gloat. Beating State is a lot like beating Southern Miss, if Ole Miss wins, “they should have.” If the Rebels lose, it’s the end of a mediocre season.
