Rebels may get a glimpse of their defensive line future in the Sugar Bowl

It was interesting to hear yesterday that Evan Engram and Fadol Brown are the underclassmen who have requested draft grades from the NFL.

Only five players from any particular school can request grades.

That would seem to further solidify Chad Kelly’s status for 2016, assuming draft grades were also sought for Laquon Treadwell, Laremy Tunsil and Robert Nkemdiche. I know last week Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze was very confident that Kelly would return.

It will be interesting to see what information Engram and Brown get back and what decisions they will make.

I had not thought about Brown as a possible early departure.

It will be a transitioning defensive line without Nkemdiche next year. The Rebels may very well get a look at what that will be like in the Sugar Bowl as the Nkemdiche news continues to play out.

It would be interesting to see how the Rebels handle a rotation without Nkemdiche. Yesterday in practice the four players getting the work were Woodrow Hamilton, Breeland Speaks, DJ Jones and true freshman Ross Donelly.

Donelly has appeared in six games and has five tackles. He went through a stretch of not playing for four games but got some snaps against both LSU and Mississippi State.

Ole Miss played half the Memphis game and the entire Texas A&M game without Nkemdiche as he sat out with a concussion.

The Texas A&M game turned out to be one of their better defensive performances of the year as they limited the Aggies to 192 yards of total offense. A&M rushed for 58 yards and was 18-for-45 passing for 134 yards and an interception.

Speaks has 30 tackles with five tackles for loss, a sack and three pressures this season.

Fadol Brown did play in the A&M game and had four tackles. He’ll miss the bowl game because of recent surgery on his foot. If he were available he would be able to slide inside and help out some at tackle.
