Buchanan giving up football

OXFORD – Ole Miss quarterback Ryan Buchanan has decided to give up football.

Buchanan, who would be a junior in eligibility in 2016, told The Ole Miss Spirit he gave consideration to transferring to continue to play but instead will remain at Ole Miss.

Buchanan said he reached the decision “a few months ago” and shared it with Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze several weeks ago.

Buchanan played high school football at Jackson Prep. At Ole Miss, he was part of a three-player competition for the starting job with Chad Kelly and DeVante Kincade prior to the 2015 season.

Kincade has also transferred.

Buchanan’s departure leaves Ole Miss with three scholarship quarterbacks: Kelly, redshirt freshman Jason Pellerin and true freshman Shea Patterson. Patterson is part of the 2016 signing class but has already enrolled and will go through spring drills. Walk-on Drew Davis is also on the roster.

Buchanan appeared in 13 games last season, mostly as the holder, and completed 8-of-13 passes for 96 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

Kudos to this young man. He’s moving on with his life and giving some other young man a chance (scholarship) to play football and get a free education. He’s gets a 5-star “in life” for this unselfish act.

I don’t know where Ryan stand in the ole Miss QB”s positioning , but if No.2 he could only be one injury away from playing, with Ryan gone ,Kelley goes down and there goes the Rebels . they wind up like the last season Gators outstanding defense and no offense

    With Shea
Patterson already committednow wonder what kind of message will Shea Patterson get from the moving on of Kincade and Buchannan and some of the other young QBs that did wait in the wings for their chance, but their chances never came. Ole Miss always resorted to the migrant fields for seasoned field hands – passing over their own home grown recruites – guess that the way things happen up there at Ole miss – Too bad
