Classic characters like Pinocchio, Snow White and Mickey Mouse will soon share the ice with new favorites like Buzz Lightyear and Nemo in the new Disney on Ice show, “100 Years of Magic.”
The show brings more than 60 Disney characters to life in a colorful, sparkling world.
For Isao Matsuura, the skater who plays Pinocchio in “100 Years of Magic,” the show makes him feel like a kid again.
“When I was little, I’d watch the movie, and I even had a tiny Pinocchio doll,” the Okayama, Japan native said. “When I got this role, I was like, wow. I was so nervous.”
He’s been playing the role for 13 years, and it’s now something that comes naturally to him.
“I love the character. I’m very close to the character. I love doing things and I’m always spontaneous,” he said. “I don’t really need to create the character; I’m just myself. I really love that. I enjoy the role.”
Matsuura and his fellow skaters, who play characters such as Belle from “Beauty and the Beast,” or Rafiki from “The Lion King,” get to show off some complex and show-stopping skating moves.
“I’m doing three triple jumps in the show. That’s difficult,” he said. “And then a pair of skaters are doing difficult tricks, too, like backflips. It’s really cool.”
Matsurra said the characters, elaborate sets, sparkling costumes and wow-worthy choreography make for a great Disney on Ice show.
“I want the audience to have a great time,” he said. “I personally like seeing their smiling faces during the finale. That makes me really happy.”
