Amerson to salute the troops with TSO

Traditional American songs and beloved Broadway tunes will help “America’s Tenor” Steve Amerson and the Tupelo Symphony Orchestra celebrate the troops.
This is Amerson’s third performance with the orchestra, and this time the tenor has put together a special program to salute America.
Traditionals like “God Bless America” and “Shenandoah” will be performed, as well as patriotic Broadway songs like “Bring Him Home” from “Les Miserables” and “The Impossible Dream” from “Man of La Mancha.”
“It’s a great program,” Amerson said in a phone interview with the Daily Journal. “There will even be a salute to all of the armed forces, with a medley of all their different songs and asking members of each to stand when their song is played.”
Amerson’s work with the Congressional Medal of Honor Society inspired him to create the patriotic program.
“I share stories I’ve experienced with these men,” he said.
For example, he said he’s likely to share a story that happened at a party for the most recent Super Bowl.
“Some New York City firefighters hosted a Super Bowl party for soldiers. I sang at that, and then I just visited rooms of wounded soldiers,” he said. “I was visiting a soldier from Indiana. … He had sung in a production of ‘Les Miz,’ so I sang some songs from ‘Les Miz,’ like ‘Do You Hear the People Sing.’ He mouthed the words along with me.”
Amerson said he’s proud to perform these songs in honor of America and its troops.
“It’s an extremely impactful program,” he said. “It’s a powerful experience, not just for the audience but for me personally.”
