‘Annie’ gets students singing at New Albany

By Sheena Barnett/NEMS Daily Journal

A hundred student-actors, countless others building, painting and creating sets and props and four big backdrops are the recipe for New Albany High School’s production of “Annie.”
It’s an entire high school effort, bringing together many freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors as they work together toward the show.
“It’s a combination of everybody working together,” said director Sylvia Nanney, who’s directing the play with her husband, Phil, and their daughter, NAHS teacher Mary Beth Muncie. “They’re gonna do a fabulous job. They’ve worked hard.”
In the musical, little orphan Annie is searching for her parents when her path crosses that of the serious millionaire Oliver Warbucks. Annie finds the father she was always looking for in “Daddy” Warbucks, and gets out of the clutches of cruel orphanage director Miss Hannigan.
Lyndi Stokes, a senior, stars as Annie, complete with red dress and bright orange curly hair.
“Annie is always optimistic,” Stokes said. “I want to be more like her and be more optimistic in life.”
Walter Smith, also a senior, stars as the millionaire Warbucks, who comes to love little Annie.
He’s having fun in the play, even singing and dancing.
“Fortunately, I don’t get to do as much dancing,” he said, laughing.
Students like Smith have worked since November to bring “Annie” to life. Art students have created props and painted sets, while construction students have overseen the creation of parts of the stage.
Stokes invites all “Annie” fans to see what the high school has done with the classic story.
“It’s a hopeful play,” she said. “It will bring joy to their hearts.”
