Artist offers collage workshops at GumTree

TUPELO – Lori Gordon works with what she’s got.
When Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, that included her Bay St. Louis home and studio.
“I lost all of my art supplies. Everything was gone. So for five years, what I worked with was storm debris,” she said.
Her Katrina collection includes more than 1,000 pieces of art made from storm debris.
Her latest collection, “Six Degrees: West to East,” is hanging at the GumTree Museum of Art through this weekend and includes her art and photos from her world travels.
But it’s that resourceful, create-art-from-anything spirit that is leading Gordon to teach a collage workshop this weekend at the museum. Participants can sign up for one day or both days of the workshop.
“Participants don’t need to have any skills more than what they’ve learned in kindergarten – it’s cut and paste,” she said. “The first day is an easier form of collage, and it’s a really good introduction for people who have never done collage. The second day, people can still make simple collages, but I introduce the more complex collages.”
Gordon’s providing the collage material, so those interested should show up with creative ideas and eager to learn.
“It’s really easy and a really very joyous experience,” Gordon said.
Gordon’s worked in all kinds of mediums, from painting to mixed media to collage, and everything in between, and she loves it all.
“My favorite medium is what I’m doing at the time,” she said.
Gordon loves creating and teaching art.
“What I really love about visual art is that it’s a wonderful instrument for education and for cross-cultural understanding,” she said. Reading about foreign countries or watching the news may not give a full perspective, she said.
“The visual arts activates a different part of the brain, so it enables a different kind of understanding of what’s going on,” she said. “Creating art helps me understand what I have seen, and helps other people get a different understanding than the get from traditional sources.”
